Why do I Need a Professional Dental Cleanings?
A thorough professional cleaning helps to remove plaque bacteria and tartar from your teeth that you cannot get to at home. There are places in your mouth that your toothbrush cannot reach, including the deep grooves and fissures in your back teeth that are even smaller than a bristle on your toothbrush. Plaque eventually hardens into tartar that can be removed only by Dr. Patel or our dental hygienist with special tools. Keeping your teeth professionally cleaned prevents tooth decay and gum disease much better than home care alone. Problems caught early help ensure fewer and less expensive dental visits in the future.

What Can I Expect During a Cleaning?
First, Dr. Patel or our hygienist will use special hand tools to scrape off any tartar that has accumulated on your teeth. We will floss between your teeth, removing any bits of food that are stuck. Then we will thoroughly clean every surface of all your teeth, removing plaque and surface stains. Finally, we will buff your teeth with a special toothpaste that polishes your teeth until they are smooth and resistant to the buildup of plaque bacteria.
Right after your teeth are cleaned and smoothed is a great time to apply fluoride to your teeth, giving extra support to your protective enamel. Dr. Patel may also recommend applying a sealant on the deep pits and grooves of your back teeth to provide a barrier from plaque bacteria.
When you come for a cleaning, it is also an opportunity for us to examine your teeth and gums for any signs of problems that need attention. Dr. Patel will do a thorough examination of your whole mouth, including teeth, gums, and soft tissues. We will look for tooth decay and cavities that may need to be filled. If your gums are swollen or receding, we may recommend additional therapies, like root scaling and planing, to stop gum disease in its tracks. In addition to early detection of tooth decay and gum disease, Dr. Patel will also do a visual oral cancer screening.
Before you leave, we will discuss treatment for any issues that were discovered in the exam. Appointments will be arranged for procedures that need to be done. We will also give you advice about how to take even better care of your teeth when you go home.
