Gum Disease Treatment

Panama City Smiles : Gum Disease Treatment in Panama City, FL

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is caused by accumulation of plaque (that sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on your teeth) and tartar (hardened plaque). This buildup of plaque and tartar creates irregular surfaces on the teeth where bacteria live and thrive. It also creates pockets between the gums and teeth, causing infection and inflammation.

Not only is gum disease a major cause of tooth loss in adults, but it is also related to other diseases and illnesses in the body. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not even know you have it until symptoms are noticed in a routine cleaning or exam.

Once detected, gum disease needs to be treated quickly to keep it from progressing into a more serious issue. Advanced gum disease, called periodontitis, can lead to loss of tissue and bone that support your teeth. Left unchecked, aggressive gum disease can move quickly to threaten the structures of your mouth and cause infection in your body.

Panama City Smiles offers non-surgical gum disease treatment in Panama City, FL  to prevent the spread of gum disease. Scaling and root planing is one of the most effective ways to stop gum disease from becoming severe.

Before scaling and root planing, we will numb the area with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Usually the treatment is done in two visits, so only one side of the mouth is numb at a time. Each treatment takes between one and two hours.

At Panama City Smiles we have three full-time hygienists and we provide non-surgical gum therapy which is basically when you haven’t had your teeth cleaned in a long time and you have gotten gum disease and the first step is to do non-surgical therapy where we clean everything out and we provide antibiotics or whatever is needed to try to get those gums healthy without having to go through surgery. In some cases it is still needed but 90% of the time we can cure what you have with non-surgical treatment which is much more comfortable for you.

Scaling is a thorough scraping and cleaning of the tooth from the crown to the root (below the gum line) to remove plaque and tartar. Root planing is the smoothing of the tooth root surface to remove any irregularities that can cause pockets between the teeth and the gums. When teeth are cleaned and smoothed, the gums will tighten around the teeth properly, keeping plaque bacteria away from the tooth roots.

Antibiotics may be prescribed before or after gum disease treatment to prevent infection. This is a routine precaution. If you are at particular risk of infection, or if your immune system is impaired in any way, please let us know before scheduling the procedure.

Good oral hygiene is extremely important in the fight against gum disease. After scaling and root planing, you should brush at least twice daily and floss once daily to preserve your clean and smooth teeth, keeping them inhospitable to plaque bacteria. Another way to promote the healing of your gums and prevent further gum disease is to stop using all tobacco products.

When gum disease is neglected and becomes aggressive, you may need to be referred to an oral surgeon to have gum surgery to save your teeth. Obviously, it is better to catch gum disease early and get treatment to reverse it!
