Veneers

Dental Veneers are a very versatile cosmetic dentistry option that we offer at Panama City Smiles. Usually made of porcelain or composite materials, veneers are a very thin custom-made shell applied to the front of the teeth. They can change the size, shape, color, and overall appearance of teeth. In comparison to other options, they last longer than bonding and are less expensive and less invasive than cosmetic crowns. Veneers are usually placed on several teeth at a time to improve your overall appearance and add uniformity to your smile.

Veneers are a great way to improve the look of teeth that:

  • Are slightly crooked
  • Are oddly shaped
  • Are a different size than neighboring teeth
  • Are discolored or permanently stained
  • Have gaps or spaces between them
  • Are worn down
  • Are cracked, chipped, or broken

The Dental Veneers Procedure

When deciding on any cosmetic dentistry procedure, the first step is to meet with Dr. Patel for a consultation. During your initial appointment, you can discuss whether veneers are the best way to improve the look of your smile and will give you the results you are looking for. He may take X-rays and impressions of your teeth in preparation for your next appointment.

At your next appointment, Dr. Patel will prepare each tooth that will receive a veneer by removing a very small amount of enamel. This will make room for the veneer to fit perfectly. He will make a model or impression of your teeth and send it to a laboratory that will create the veneers to fit your teeth exactly. We will receive your veneers back from the lab in one or two weeks.

When you return, Dr. Patel will check each veneer to make sure it is the right size, shape, and color before permanently bonding them to your teeth. To prepare each tooth for bonding, he will clean, polish, and etch them. Etching roughens the surface of the tooth to create a stronger bond with the veneer. He will apply a special dental cement to the veneer and place it on the tooth. Once the veneer is in proper position, a special light is directed at the tooth, activating and hardening the cement to affix the veneer permanently. After each veneer is positioned and bonded, they are trimmed of excess cement and smoothed. You will look like you have brand new teeth!

We may schedule a follow-up appointment to make sure your veneers are staying where they should, and to see that your gums are responding well to the presence of the veneers.

You can expect dental veneers to last from 5 to 10 years or longer, then they will need to be replaced. Because the veneer process requires removing some enamel from your tooth, it is not reversible.

Taking care of your dental veneers is as simple as brushing, flossing, and seeing Dr. Patel regularly. You should avoid doing anything that would put excessive pressure on your veneers, like biting your fingernails, chewing pencils, grinding your teeth, or chomping on ice.

If you are interested in improving the look of the teeth that show when you smile, dental veneers are a very good option.
