The road to a healthy mouth begins at Panama City Smiles. We can help you get the kind of smile you have been looking for. When you aren’t in our office, however, you are responsible for taking care of your mouth. To help make this easier for you, here are some money-saving tips to give you the tools you need to keep your smile bright.
Home Dental Care Made Easy
All-Natural Toothpaste – The one dental care product that everyone uses is toothpaste. We might not use mouthwash or floss as often as we should, but we all brush our teeth on a daily basis. This is the easiest place to add a natural element to your dental care and save some money in the process. Here is a recipe for a great all-natural toothpaste that will clean your teeth and freshen your breath. Use this as a supplement to your regular fluoride toothpaste, which helps prevent tooth decay.
Put ⅔ cup of baking soda, a teaspoon of sea salt, and two teaspoons of a naturally flavored oil (spearmint, peppermint, etc.) in a mason jar. Add enough filtered water until you get to the desired toothpaste-like consistency. This recipe will yield about 5 – 6 ounces of toothpaste, similar to what you would get from a store- bought brand of toothpaste. Keep the toothpaste in a cool area, out of the sunlight. This is not to keep it from spoiling but so that the light does not start to break down the essential oils. Depending on the flavoring you choose and how much you use, your toothpaste can cost you anywhere from about 60 cents all the way up to $1.50 per batch. Compare that to the $3 to $5 spent on most store brands.
Homemade Oral Rinse – You have probably seen commercial after commercial on TV about how mouthwash will help your mouth. They talk about saving your gums from the ravages of gingivitis and impress with statistics like, “kills 99.99% of germs in your mouth.” While this is true, what if you could get many of the same benefits from a natural, homemade mouthwash, and that you would save a ton of money in the process? Here is an all-natural mouthwash recipe that can save you as much as 70 percent over the generic mouthwash brands you would find in the store. If Dr. Patel has prescribed or recommended a mouthwash for you, ask him if this could be a good substitute.
Fill a mason jar with ½ cup of filtered or distilled water and add 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Then, add 2 drops each of tea tree and peppermint essential oils to the mason jar, place the lid on it, and mix it up thoroughly. Make only this amount at first to help you determine how long it will take you to go through it. It won’t spoil, but as the oils continue to sit, their taste will change. Once you know how much you’ll go through in about 2 weeks, you can start making that amount. If the baking soda settles in between uses, just shake the jar to mix it all back up. This recipe will cost you about 3 cents per ounce. Even the cheap versions of store-bought mouthwash will cost you about 10 cents per ounce.
Mother Nature’s Teeth Whitening – Your teeth are supposed to be white, but it seems like everything we eat or drink keeps trying to darken the color of our teeth. There are store-bought solutions, but they can be messy, and the results are mixed at best. So why waste money on teeth whitening from the store if you aren’t even sure it will work? What if you found out there was a natural way to whiten your teeth that was also easy, cheap, and effective? Here is a teeth whitening recipe that can lighten the shade of your teeth.
Strawberries are the key ingredient in this homemade, all-natural teeth whitening recipe. Strawberries contain a chemical called malic acid, which is a natural enamel whitener. The recipe is simple. Just take a strawberry or two and mash them into a pulp. Then take some baking soda and mix enough in to make a paste. Once the paste is made, spread it along your teeth, and let the malic acid do its job. You will want to keep the mixture on your teeth for about five or six minutes. After that, rinse your mouth out completely. You may want to brush your teeth as well to remove the seeds from the strawberries, which tend to get stuck in your teeth. If done consistently, this method may yield surprising whitening results. However, it will take some time.
