New PatientsDoctor Carlton Schwatrz on caring for special needs patients at Panama City SmilesRead Transcript
I've been in the Bay County area for, well, since 1971, and I've had several practices, and during that course of those practices, I started taking care of special needs patients under general anesthesia at Bay Medical Center. And now that it's time for me to pass the baton to find a practice that would take over these special needs patients, I chose Dr. Patel's practice here at Panama City Smiles, because number one, he has the credentials. He's qualified with Medicaid and Med waiver to take care of these patients, and now he's on the staff of the hospital at Bay Medical Center. So, we're in a period of transition to take these patients and turn them over to him, and he'll be fully equipped to take care of special needs patients and any other patients that require general anesthesia in a hospital setting. Dr. Patel has designed this office so that there are several operatories. I think there are 15 operatories all in all, but two or three of them are geared specifically toward treating special needs patients in a quiet environment. There's plenty of room for any kind of non-ambulatory patient, like many come in on wheelchairs, sometimes even on a stretcher, and we're able to do their exam and screening and x-rays and preliminary things here to get them prepared to have treatment under general anesthesia at Bay Medical Center. We do it on an outpatient basis. We put the patient in the hospital that morning and they're free to go back home that afternoon after we've done the treatment. I really appreciate the fact that Dr. Patel is stepping up to take my place, to start treating these patients, simply because there really is a need to take care of the special needs patients here, and I really appreciate that fact. And I feel very comfortable merging my patients over to this practice.
